                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to facilitate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <p>Indeed I must stand out for <measure type="currency">£800-£600</measure> was for
                    a 1 vol novel – this is two volumes – &amp; I have spent over it two years of
                    care &amp; pains – if you dislike the risk – give me <measure type="currency"
                        >£400</measure> for its running through <title
                        corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#GoodWords">Good Words</title> – &amp; I will
                    find some other publisher for it in book form. – Only – one way or other – we
                    must decide at once. – <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HolmanHunt">Mr. Holman
                        Hunt</persName>says he would like me to choose between the two sketches I
                    have, &amp; one which will arrive from <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Syria"
                        >Syria</placeName> in a few days – then you shall hear from me. – But
                    indeed you must make your decision about <title
                        corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#YoungMrsJardine">“Young Mrs. Jardine”</title> –

Indeed I must stand out for £800-£600 was for a 1 vol novel – this is two volumes – & I have spent over it two years of care & pains – if you dislike the risk – give me £400 for its running through Good Words – & I will find some other publisher for it in book form. – Only – one way or other – we must decide at once. – Mr. Holman Huntsays he would like me to choose between the two sketches I have, & one which will arrive from Syria in a few days – then you shall hear from me. – But indeed you must make your decision about “Young Mrs. Jardine” – say also where you wd would wish it to begin if you have it from G.W.
