                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to facilitate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <p>It is settled then. Send me the agreement to sign whenever you like. – </p>
                <p>–One word without being sentimental, I <hi rend="underline">know</hi> my life is
                    uncertain – &amp; I always do things at once – so far as I am – would you mind
                    setting up the book in type – <title ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#GoodWords"
                                ><abbr>G.W.<expan>Good Words</expan></abbr></title> type – &amp;
                    letting me correct it as a whole–proof &amp; revises – you can then keep one
                    revise – I will keep another &amp; a third may go to the Artist. – After which
                    you could either keep the type standing or distribute it – but the thing will be
                    secure – I should not like my M.S. – the only copy to go out of my hands, except
                    to the printer, chapter by chapter – &amp; I <hi rend="underline">should</hi>
                    like, very much, to feel that I had corrected the whole myself.</p>
                <p>As to payment, what do you say to the usual form viz. half–payment <measure
                        type="currency">£400</measure> – "on delivery of the M.S."–– &amp; the other
                    half whenever suits you but up to the day of publication (in book form) – which
                    concludes the whole – A good while to wait – nearly 18 months I suppose: – but I
                        <add place="above">also</add>suppose it can't be helped – </p>
                <p>I <hi rend="underline">feel</hi>the book will do – it is the sort of thing that
                    will be given as a present to young people – &amp; so on – Its contrast to the
                    present style of novel – <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Ouida"
                        >Ouida</persName>&amp;etcetera – is something quite startling – in a moral
                    point of view – <add place="above">amusing even</add> – if it were not so
                    exceedingly sad. – </p>
