Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. My dear Mrs. Loudon

The enclosed was written for Jerrold’s Mag Magazine – & the Mag Magazine – ended the following month since then I have had it lying by me – If it will suit you I shall be glad – especially as I fear I shall never to be able to write a fresh story just yet – being in the midst of a novel which must needs be done by early spring.

You are very kind about the Fancy ball – I should like it very much – but I fear me I shall never manage it. Tomorrow morning early I go with some friends to Brighton & shall stay till Saturday. This leaves me only one day for settling costume &c which I never can accomplish I fear –

I am sure it is best to make no feigned apologies – but the plain truth – saying, moreover, that I should have liked to come very much – if it had been practicable. Mrs. Wills told you the comical error of my last note.

Believe me — Ever truly yours DMMulock
