                <p>I send you – confidentially – the rough draft of my scheme – as to the size of

                    </choice> – pages Your printer can easily reckon – </p>
                <p>My books planned are – an original tale by myself, to begin with – this beautiful
                    little tale of <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DeWittHenriette">Madame Guizot
                        de Wit</persName>’s which I have translated – a New England story by an
                    American niece of <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HowittMary">Mary
                        Howitt</persName>’s – probably another by my Cousin <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#CraikGeorgiana">Miss Craik</persName> – &amp; so on.
                    – </p>
                <p>I should like to have the arranging of all payments to authors – you <hi
                        rend="underline">cannot</hi> get good authors without good pay – with a
                    certain profit to myself, for my trouble &amp; responsibility: – &amp; to be
                    paid separately for the books I write myself, or translate. – If you keep the
                    American sale in your own hands – you must allow an equivalent for the
                    arrangement I should otherwise have made with <orgName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Harpers">Harper’s</orgName> – in the case of my
                    book. – </p>
                <p> I do honestly believe that if carefully, <unclear reason="illegible">&amp;
                        well</unclear>, &amp; liberally conducted – such a scheme might secure a
                    large sale for many years – to the benefit of both author &amp; publisher. &amp;
                    it has this advantage – you can feel your way step by step – &amp; book by book
                    – so as to stop at any time. – I shall be glad to hear from you as soon as you
                    have thought it over – </p>
