                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to facilitate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

Feb February 5 — The Corner House Shortlands, Kent. Dear Miss Cooke

You are exceedingly kind — but I hardly ever dine & sleep from home & my husband dislikes it nearly as much as I do. — (About once a year we go to the Elms — & that is all. — we find the distance makes return at night very difficult & in winter quite impracticable — So please excuse us & accept our thanks for remembering us so long. —
