            <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
               accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the manuscript.
               Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbrieviations, additions
               and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a
               line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we
               have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to
               faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.</p>

            <p>You would get my letter &amp; see that I have managed the bonnet question. It will
               turn up in Oct I dare say – yours is most practical &amp; sensible – I wonder how all
               has gone with you in that dreadful rain – I hope you are all settled down now – </p>
            <p>– here is your blue ribbon. Any thing else you want? – Are you <hi rend="underline"
                  >sure</hi> your clothes will be warm enough? – It has turned quite winterly now –
               fires – &amp; soaking rain. –</p>
            <p>Now here is some business which I know you are as capable of doing as anybody. – Last
               night I met at the <orgName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Western">Western's</orgName>
               their cousin <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MissAtkinson">Miss Atkinson</persName>
               – who lives next door but one to the <orgName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Pilkington"
                  >Pilkingtons</orgName> &amp; is very fond of them all. – She – <persName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MissAtkinson">Miss. A</persName> – has to join her mother
               &amp; father at <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Rothesay">Rothesay</placeName>
               next week – But they have heard so ill an account of <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Rothesay">Rothesay</placeName> that she thinks <placeName
                  ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Arran">Arran</placeName> would be much better. They want
               to stay till October – would like best lodgings – 4 bedrooms &amp; a sitting-room –
               as they can bring no plate linen or servants. – But lodgings are impossible at
                  <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Arran">Arran</placeName>.– Would you go to
                  <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MrsMacdonald">Mrs. Macdonald</persName> &amp;
               state the case – &amp; to ask whether she would take them on pension – an old &amp;
               rather invalid lady &amp; her two daughters – (I am not sure that there are not
               three) – and what she would take them for per week each – considering that they stay
               till October. – Also, will you find out whether there is any doctor on the Island
               except <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#JamiesonJohn">Dr. Jamieson</persName> –
                  <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DrFullarton">Dr. Fullarton</persName> is dead I
               know. – &amp; what <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MissStoddart">Miss
                  Stoddart</persName> thinks of him <add place="above">if any[thing]</add>. –
                  <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MissAtkinson">Miss Atkinson</persName> you may
               have seen. She is <hi rend="underline">very</hi> nice. – &amp; I am glad to do
               anything for her. Now I know you will do this in the most sensible &amp; accurate
               way. &amp; write fully the result – &amp; I shall get the letter on Monday or Tuesday
               – </p>
            <p>We go to to <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Salton">Salton</placeName> tomorrow
               till Monday – I have only a minute before post –</p>
